Science – ‘To confidently question, explore, discover and investigate the world around us’

Intent

At Curbar Primary School, we encourage children to be inquisitive throughout their time at the school and beyond. The science curriculum fosters a healthy curiosity in children about our universe and promotes respect for the living and non-living.  We strive to help our children understand and question the world around them through the acquisition of knowledge, concepts, skills and positive attitudes.  Our aim is for it to be taught as part of an inspirational and stimulating curriculum, where we plan sequential lessons building on previous learning, and successfully ignite new learning. We link the concepts taught to topics and real-life to make it relevant and meaningful thus increasing our children’s cultural capital.  Our intention is to develop scientific enquiry so our children can discover, question develop ideas effectively and explain what is happening, – predict how things will behave, analyse causes and develop conclusions, patterns and links – thus evolving their knowledge and bank of core skills which will equip them for an ever-changing world.

At Curbar, we promote pupils’ SMSC development through mathematics in the following ways:

  • Develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
  • Develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them.
  • Are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.
  • Are equipped with the skills and opportunities our pupils will be confident lifelong learners that will explore the world around them.

Implementation

Science topics follow our four year topic cycle and repeat every two years.  Lessons are taught through a range of theoretical and practical approaches where ‘working scientifically’ skills are prioritised.
