PE

Intent

At Curbar Primary School, the PE and School Sport Curriculum has been designed to inspire learners to realise their full potential and develop a lifelong interest in participating in physical activity and sport, whatever their innate ability in PE.  PE also has considerable potential to contribute to wider areas of learning developing the whole child, including the development of physical, cognitive, social, creative and personal development and supporting well-being and mental health.  We aim to provide the children with as many opportunities to access high-quality physical education as possible, inspire all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive and non-competitive school sport and other physically-demanding activities. It aims to provide opportunities both within the curriculum and in extracurricular activities, for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness, builds character, embed values such as fairness and respect; and is mindful of the social, emotional, psychological and academic benefits of sport and exercise.  The curriculum, delivered by both school and external staff, intends to ensure that all pupils develop competence in a broad range of physical activities, are physically active for sustained periods of time (such as lunchtimes and breaks), engage in competitive sports and activities and are positively encouraged and aided to live healthy, active lives outside school and beyond primary education.

At Curbar, we promote pupils’ SMSC development through physical education in the following ways:
  • We develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities.
  • We are physically active for sustained periods of time.
  • We engage in competitive sports and activities.
  • We lead healthy, active lives and recognise the value of activity in supporting well-being.
  • We promote fair play and team work in lessons and encourage good sportsmanship throughout.
  • We interact with the school and external communities through clubs and competition.
  • We encourage students to recognise and respect social differences and similarities.
  • We celebrate sporting success both in and out of school.
  • We use sports leaders to run break and lunchtime clubs and activities.

Implementation

Our pupils develop the ability to take the initiative, lead, organise and officiate and instil good sporting attitudes in themselves and others.  Pupils discover how to improve their own and others’ performances and when evaluating performance, pupils’ curiosity is fostered through encouragement to consider ways of improving their skills.  Pupils take part in swimming lessons, enabling them to swim at least 25m before leaving Curbar Primary School, and know how to remain safe in and around water.  Pupils discover the importance of exercise in promoting long-term health and emotional well-being.
